The Research To Startup program (RTS) is an initiative of the Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP), that aims to facilitate the creation, acceleration and scaling of startups that leverage technologies developed by leading research institutes and universities in Qatar.
Selected entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to explore new market applications for technologies developed by the Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI), Qatar University (QU) and Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar (VCU-Q).
The Program consists of 3 phases, and we are inviting seasoned entrepreneurs and product managers to apply for the Research to Startup Program, including a all expense paid trip to Qatar, to learn more to compete for the opportunity to help us launch the next generation of tech companies. Those ultimately chosen to continue in the program will receive a Seed investment from QSTP of up to $500,000, to turn their ideas into reality.
Phase 0: Application
Closes: 13th of September. Apply here.
Phase 1: Boot Camp (October 2019 - 13th to 17th)
During this 5 Day Boot Camp, you will get to know the technology you’ve expressed interest in better, meet the researchers who developed it, understand the current market application of the technology, and start building a business model to scale it internationally.
Phase 2: Business Plan Development (1 - 3 months)
Based on the outcome of Phase 1, the next step is to work towards the goal of creating a fundable operational plan. To facilitate this process you may be offered a position as Entrepreneur In Residence (EIR), and will work intensively alongside the local team, and possibly other EIRs. The program concludes with a pitch for seed-stage capital from QSTP. The expected outcome is that EIRs assume C Level roles in the startup business and work towards identifying external investors to participate in a Series A round.
Phase 3: Launch
If selected, you will build a team and start to execute your business plan, potentially in a highly favorable business jurisdiction such as QSTP, and begin your operation with a $500,000 seed-stage investment to accelerate your venture.
The expected outcome is that the entrepreneur shall assume the role of startup CEO and will work towards launching the product and identifying external investors to participate in Series A round.
The program is run in partnership with Global Scaling Academy, who offer specialized expertise in commercializing research, to bring the Research-to-Startup Program to life, by catering to the needs of QSTP and the research community in Qatar. The program goals are to recruit entrepreneurs globally, by matching them with technologies, forming teams, and driving the startup journey forward to explore the commercialization potential of their ideas, ideally culminating in the formation of a fundable early-stage technology company.
